For about a decade, if you wanted HBO shows in the UK, you needed Sky. That deal is over. HBO Max now runs as its own service here, launched on 26 March 2026, and you can subscribe without going anywhere near a Sky contract. It is also cheaper to get started than Netflix or Disney+. Here is what it costs, the different ways to watch it, and how to avoid paying twice for something you might already have.

A quick note before the numbers: streaming prices move around, and HBO Max has already raised them in other countries. Everything below is accurate for mid-2026, but check the official pricing page before you commit.

What HBO Max actually is

HBO Max is Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service. It pulls together three things that used to be scattered: HBO’s drama catalogue, the Warner film library, and Discovery’s reality and factual output. In the UK it replaces the old arrangement where HBO shows lived behind Sky’s Sky Atlantic channel and the NOW Entertainment pass.

The important part of that history: Sky held the UK rights to HBO for years, under a deal that was winding down at the end of 2025. Rather than let it lapse into a gap, Sky and Warner struck a new agreement. New HBO titles now premiere on HBO Max, Sky and NOW customers get a version of HBO Max included, and Sky Atlantic still carries new seasons of the big shows linearly. So HBO did not leave Sky so much as expand past it.

HBO Max UK prices

There are four tiers. The gap between them is mostly about ads, picture quality, and how many people can watch at once.

TierPrice per monthAdsStreamsMax qualityDownloads
Basic with Ads£4.99Yes2Full HD 1080pNone
Standard with Ads£5.99Yes2Full HD 1080pUp to 30
Standard£9.99No2Full HD 1080pUp to 30
Premium£14.99No44K UHD, Dolby AtmosUp to 100

A few things worth knowing. The cheapest Basic tier has ads and no downloads, and it holds back the newest Warner films while they are still in their paid rental window, so it is the one to avoid if you want the latest releases the moment they land. Premium is the only tier that gives you 4K and Dolby Atmos, and the only one that lets four screens watch at the same time, which matters for a family.

There is no annual plan for these entertainment tiers, so you cannot pay for a year up front to save money. The only twelve-month commitment on offer is for the separate TNT Sports add-on, which is a different product.

How to watch HBO Max in the UK

This is where it gets slightly confusing, because there are four routes in and they are not priced the same. Here is the short version.

RouteEntry priceWhat you get
Direct from HBO Max£4.99 a monthAny of the four tiers, no other subscription needed
Sky Ultimate TVFrom £24 a monthHBO Max plus Netflix, Disney+, Hayu and around 130 Sky channels
NOWFrom £6.99 a monthNOW Entertainment plus HBO Max, no contract
Amazon Prime VideoSame as directHBO Max as an add-on channel inside Prime Video

Direct from HBO Max

The simplest option. Go to hbomax.com or open the app, pick a tier, and pay HBO Max directly. No Sky, no NOW, no contract. This is the route to choose if you just want HBO Max and nothing else, or if you specifically want the ad-free Standard or the 4K Premium tier that the bundles do not include.

Through Sky

Sky has folded HBO Max into a new package called Ultimate TV, which brings Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Hayu together with its live channels for a new-customer price from £24 a month on a two-year term. HBO Max Basic with Ads is also included with eligible Sky Q Signature, Entertainment, Cinema and Sky+ packages at no extra cost. If you already have Sky TV, look at your account before paying separately, because there is a good chance you already have the entry tier. Our Sky Stream setup guide covers the hardware side if you are new to Sky’s streaming boxes.

One caveat with Sky: it can raise prices during a contract, and there was a Sky TV price rise reported around the HBO Max addition. Bundles are convenient, but they are rarely the cheapest way to get one specific service.

Through NOW

NOW, which is Sky’s contract-free streaming brand, now sells a combined membership that pairs NOW Entertainment with HBO Max from £6.99 a month. Existing NOW Entertainment members were given HBO Max Basic with Ads at no extra cost when it launched. NOW is the flexible middle ground: no contract, cancel any month, and you still get the Sky Atlantic style content alongside HBO Max.

Through Amazon Prime Video

If your device does not have the HBO Max app yet, or you just prefer keeping everything in one place, HBO Max is sold as an add-on channel inside Prime Video at the same price as subscribing directly. You need a Prime membership for this, and it is worth noting the 4K Premium tier may not be offered through this route, so check before relying on it for Ultra HD.

Is it free with Sky or NOW?

This is the question worth slowing down for, because it is where people waste money.

HBO Max is not a free service. But HBO Max Basic with Ads, the £4.99 entry tier, is bundled in at no extra cost with several Sky TV packages and with NOW Entertainment. So if you already pay Sky or NOW for television, you very likely already have HBO Max sitting in your apps, and paying again would be pointless. The only reason to add a paid HBO Max subscription on top is if you want to remove the ads or step up to 4K, which the included version does not give you.

Check your Sky or NOW account first. If HBO Max is already there, you are done.

What is on HBO Max

The pitch is the HBO back catalogue plus Warner’s films, and for a lot of people that is the whole reason to subscribe.

On the drama side you get the shows HBO built its name on: Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, Succession, Euphoria, True Detective, and older classics like The Sopranos and The Wire. Newer originals such as The Pitt, Dune: Prophecy, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and IT: Welcome to Derry sit alongside them. There is comedy too, including Friends, The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon from the wider Warner library.

On film, the service carries recent Warner releases and the studio’s deep back catalogue, including the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films. The new Harry Potter television series is an HBO Max exclusive, which is a large part of why Warner wanted its own platform rather than licensing everything to Sky.

Two honest caveats. First, the UK catalogue is not identical to the US one, because rights are licensed region by region, and some HBO seasons still run on Sky Atlantic in the UK first. Second, do not confuse Hayu with HBO Max. Hayu is a separate reality service that Sky bundles alongside HBO Max in Ultimate TV, and its shows are not HBO Max content.

What happened to HBO on Sky Atlantic

If you have watched HBO shows on Sky for years, nothing vanished overnight. Sky Atlantic is still there, and it still shows new seasons of the big HBO dramas as they air. What changed is where the full box sets and the newest Max originals live. The complete catalogue, plus shows made only for HBO Max, now sits in the HBO Max app rather than being spread across Sky Atlantic and the old NOW pass.

In practice, a Sky or NOW customer now has two ways to reach the same shows: the linear Sky Atlantic channel for new episodes week to week, and the HBO Max app for everything on demand. You do not have to choose between them. Both come with the packages that include HBO Max Basic with Ads.

Which devices support HBO Max

The app is on nearly everything. That includes Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Samsung and LG smart TVs, Apple TV, Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads, PlayStation and Xbox, Virgin Media and EE TV boxes, Sky Glass, Sky Stream and Sky Q, and any web browser. It is also available as that Prime Video add-on channel.

For picture quality, Sky lists a minimum of around 5 Mbps for the ad-supported tiers. For 4K on the Premium tier you want a good deal more headroom than that. If your connection is the weak point, our guide to data usage and speeds for streaming explains how much you actually need for smooth playback.

Downloads, 4K and watching on the move

Two features separate the tiers in a way the headline price does not make obvious.

Downloads come first. The cheapest Basic with Ads tier has none at all, so there is no saving shows for a flight or a train with no signal. Standard with Ads and ad-free Standard both allow up to 30 downloads, and Premium raises that to 100. If you watch on a phone or tablet away from wifi, skip the Basic tier.

Picture quality is the second split. Only the Premium tier streams in 4K with Dolby Atmos sound. The other three top out at Full HD 1080p, which is fine on a phone or a smaller set but noticeably softer than 4K on a large modern TV. Pay for Premium only if you have a screen that can show the difference and the broadband to feed it.

HBO Max vs Netflix vs Disney+

On price, HBO Max lands well. This is the rough picture in mid-2026, though rival prices change often, so treat it as a snapshot.

ServiceAd tierAd-free standard4K premium
HBO Max£4.99£9.99£14.99
Netflix£5.99£12.99£18.99
Disney+£5.99£9.99£14.99

HBO Max undercuts both Netflix and Disney+ at the ad-supported entry point, and its 4K Premium tier is cheaper than Netflix’s top plan while matching Disney+. Whether it is better value overall depends entirely on whether you want what HBO makes. If you have been waiting for the next season of a specific HBO show, the maths is simple. If you mainly watch Netflix originals, it is another bill.

Which route should you pick?

Start by checking whether you already have it. If you pay for Sky TV or NOW Entertainment, open your apps first, because the £4.99 tier is probably already there and there is no sense buying it twice.

If you are starting fresh and you only want HBO Max, subscribe directly and choose the tier that matches how you watch. Standard with Ads at £5.99 is the sweet spot for most people who want downloads without paying for 4K. Go Premium only if you have a 4K TV worth feeding and more than two people watching at once.

The Sky Ultimate TV bundle is genuinely good value if you actually want all of it: Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hayu and a full live channel lineup in one place. It is poor value if you are buying the whole bundle to watch one service. For most cord-cutters, a couple of standalone subscriptions you can pause and swap still beats a two-year contract. If a big Sky bill is what pushed you to look at this in the first place, our guide to the cheapest ways to watch TV in the UK lays out how to keep the total down.

Frequently asked questions

How much is HBO Max in the UK?

There are four monthly tiers as of mid-2026: Basic with Ads at £4.99, Standard with Ads at £5.99, ad-free Standard at £9.99, and Premium at £14.99. Premium is the only tier with 4K and four simultaneous streams. There is no annual plan for the entertainment tiers, and prices can change, so check the official page before you sign up.

Is HBO Max free with Sky or NOW?

For a lot of people, yes, in effect. HBO Max Basic with Ads is included at no extra cost with eligible Sky Q Signature, Entertainment, Cinema and Sky+ packages, and with a NOW Entertainment membership. It is not a separate free service, but if you already pay Sky or NOW for TV, you may already have it. Check your account before paying for a second subscription.

Do I need Sky to watch HBO Max in the UK?

No. You can subscribe to HBO Max on its own at hbomax.com or through the app on most TVs, phones and streaming devices, with no Sky account needed. Sky is just one of several routes, alongside NOW and Amazon Prime Video.

Is HBO Max cheaper than Netflix?

At the entry level, yes. HBO Max Basic with Ads is £4.99, below the £5.99 ad tiers on Netflix and Disney+. For 4K, HBO Max Premium at £14.99 is cheaper than Netflix Premium and level with Disney+ Premium. Rival prices change often, so compare on the day you buy.

Can I watch HBO Max on a Fire TV Stick or smart TV?

Yes. The HBO Max app is on Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Samsung and LG smart TVs, Apple TV, Android and iOS, games consoles, Sky Glass and Stream, Virgin Media and EE TV, and the web. You need about 5 Mbps of broadband for the ad-supported tiers and more for 4K.
